Getting your learner’s licence is your first big step to driving. But before you can start driving lessons or take the test, you have to book your learner’s test online.
Many people think this part is hard — but it’s actually not. You don’t need to pay someone to do it for you. You can do it yourself, even on your phone.
This guide will show you, step-by-step, how to book your learner’s test on the official website: NaTIS (National Traffic Information System).
Before you go online, make sure you have:
A South African ID or passport
Your personal details (name, surname, address)
A valid cellphone number
A working email address (create a free Gmail if needed)
Access to the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data)
Your nearest Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) — this is where you’ll go write the test.
Go to: online.natis.gov.za
You’ll see a few different options. Click on:
“Book Now for Learner’s Licence Test”
Fill in the form with your:
ID number
Full name
Cellphone number
Email address
Home address
Make sure all details are correct. This info must match what’s on your ID.
Pick the driving licence testing centre (DLTC) nearest to you.
If you live in a township, choose the one you can get to easily — even if it’s a little further, it’s better to pick one where test slots are open.
This part can be tricky — sometimes there are no open slots right away.
Keep checking every day (slots open and close often).
Pick a date that gives you at least 2–3 weeks to study.
Choose morning times if you can — your brain is fresher!
Once you’ve chosen your date and time, double-check everything and click:
“Confirm Booking”
You’ll now get a booking confirmation slip. Save it or screenshot it.
You’ll also get a copy in your email.
You must still go in person to the testing centre (DLTC) where you booked. Do this within 3 days, or your booking will be cancelled.
Take these items to the centre:
Your South African ID book/card or passport
Your booking confirmation (printed or on your phone)
2 black & white ID photos (passport-size)
Around R108 – R135 in cash (confirm amount with your centre)
A pen (just in case)
Proof of address (e.g. a bill or letter from your school or local councillor) — especially if you don’t live with your parents
Tip: If your name is not on the proof of address, take an affidavit from the police station.
Once you’ve paid and submitted your forms, the testing centre will give you:
A receipt
Your official test date and time
Info about when to arrive
Now it’s time to study hard and prepare!
Here are easy ways to learn fast:
Use K53 practice apps (many are free on the App Store or Google Play)
Download free PDF learner test questions from trusted websites
Join a WhatsApp study group or ask a friend to quiz you
Study road signs, vehicle controls, and rules of the road
Read your K53 manual (ask your school, teacher, or youth group if you don’t have one)
Yes, but make sure you can access the email and messages, because that’s how they send your confirmation.
Keep checking! Try booking at less busy centres if you can travel. Early mornings (5–7am) are best for checking.
Yes. Go to the same NaTIS website and look for the “Change Booking” option. But do it before your test date.
No — you only pay at the testing centre, not online.
Booking your learner’s test online is the first real step to getting your driver’s licence. It may feel like a lot at first, but once you’ve booked, it becomes real. You’re now on the road to independence, freedom — and maybe even job opportunities!
So don’t wait. Get online, book that date, and believe in yourself.

Not all provinces and testing stations in South Africa are available for online booking yet.
If you go to online.natis.gov.za
and see the message:
“Your Province has not been added to the online platform”
— this means your area doesn’t support online bookings yet.
But don’t worry — you can still book in person at your nearest Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC).
If online booking isn’t working for your area, here’s what to do instead:
Visit or call your local DLTC. You can also ask at your municipal office or check on your province’s transport department website.
Take the following with you:
Your South African ID (or passport)
Two black & white ID photos
Proof of address (or affidavit)
Around R108 – R135 for the booking
A pen (just in case)
They will give you a form to fill out and assign you a test date.
OR
Download the form-LL1 HERE.
Print it out and fill it in at home.
As of now, only some parts of these provinces offer online booking:
Gauteng (most centres are online)
Western Cape (only a few centres)
KZN (some urban centres)
For everyone else — bookings are still done in person at the DLTC.
Even if you can’t book online, you can still use https://online.natis.gov.za to:
Check your licence status
Renew a driving licence card
View your traffic fines
Apply for a PDP (Professional Driving Permit)
